We at Town and Country want you to choose a parasite control product that not only works well, but is safe for your pet. For that reason, and because of the wide range of products on the market, we recommend obtaining your parasiticides from us. Let's talk about what's available.

If your dog is exposed to fleas AND ticks, there are 3 choices for topical monthly control.  These are K9 Advantix (imidacloprid + permethrin), Frontline (fipronil), and Vectra 3D (dinotefuran + pyriproxyfen + permethrin. All three products are effective, safe, and waterproof within a day after application. Frontline has a spray on version as well, but it can be labor intensive for large dogs (1 pump per pound of body weight). One thing to consider when choosing one of these products is that K9 Advantix & Vectra 3D are both very toxic to cats, even by contact with treated dogs. However, there is a Vectra product for cats.

If your dog is only exposed to fleas and ticks are of no concern, then there are several other options in addition to the above mentioned. If you are looking for a product that will simply kill and control fleas, and nothing more, we offer Advantage (imidacloprid), Capstar (nitenpyram), and Comfortis (spinosad). Advantage is a topical that is applied monthly. It is very effective and safe, and is waterproof within a day after application. Capstar is an oral tablet that provides quick, but short acting kill of fleas. It should be combined with another product for long acting control. Comfortis is also an oral tablet, similar to Capstar, but lasts for one month.

On the flip side, if you are concerned only about ticks, and not fleas, you may choose to use a Preventick collar (amitraz). When worn properly, Preventick collars act to prevent TICKS ONLY, for up to 3 months. However, it should be noted that Preventick collars are extremely TOXIC TO CATS, AND TOXIC TO DOGS IF CHEWED AND INGESTED. Also, these collars should not be used with anti-anxiety medications.

If you need a product that combines flea control, heartworm preventative, and intestinal parasite control all into one, we have three products to choose from. These are Advantage Multi (imidacloprid + moxidectin), Revolution (selamectin), and Sentinel Flavor Tabs (milbemycin oxime + lufenuron). Advantage Multi and Revolution are both applied topically each month, while Sentinel is a monthly oral chewable tablet. Things to consider: Advantage and Revolution also control ear mites, and Revolution controls sarcoptic mange as well. Sentinel does not kill adult fleas or their larvae, it only prevents flea eggs from hatching. It can be thought of as flea "birth control".

There are several different products to consider if your pet is a cat.

For flea and tick control, there are only two products that we carry: Frontline (fipronil) in the topical spot on or spray on formulas, and Vectra (dinotefuran + pyriproxyfen), which is also a monthly spot on. As with their canine counterparts, both of these products are safe, effective, and waterproof after a day or so.

For flea control only, we offer Advantage (imidacloprid) and Capstar (nitenpyram). Advantage is applied monthly as a spot on topical, while capstar is an oral tablet that is very effective for quick kill of live fleas, but should be combined with another product for long acting control, as it only lasts for approximately 24 hours.

Although we once thought that heartworms only affected dogs, recent research has shown that cats, too, are affected by heartworms. While heartworm disease in canines primarily affects the heart, it is more of a respiratory disease for the feline population, and equally dangerous for felines and canines. Because of the difficulty in diagnosing heartworm disease in cats ( there is no definitive test, as there is with dogs), the Doctors and staff at Town and Country strongly recommend heartworm preventative for EVERY cat, whether indoor or out. The two products we offer for feline heartworm preventative are Advantage Multi (imidacloprid + moxidectin) and Revolution (selamectin). Both of these are monthly spot on topicals that not only prevent heartworms, but also provide excellent flea control, intestinal parasite control, and ear mite control.

Because fleas and ticks not only cause skin disease but can cause systemic infections in cats and dogs, we recommend year round control for every pet, regardless of lifestyle. As you can see, we have several products to choose from. Our staff would be happy to help you determine which products would best suit your pet.
